Friday the 13th is known to be unlucky, but surely not for Sam Smith fans. The Grammy-winning artist dropped their new music video for “Gimme,” which is the third single from GLORIA, their highly anticipated new album releasing on January 27th.

“Gimme” features Jamaican reggae singer Koffee and Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez, with the latter set to open up for Smith on the GLORIA North American tour. This song is in line with the sensual house party vibe that Smith has transitioned into following the success of their Grammy-nominated song “Unholy” featuring Kim Petras.

The chorus of “Gimme” is catchy and the upbeat instrumental makes the song easily danceable. Reyez dominates the song’s hook while Smith delivers vocally in the early verses and harmonious adlibs. Koffee’s verse adds some extra flair that makes the song feel complete with the afro-beat instrumental. Both the song and music video exude confident and sensual energy, with close-up shots of club-goers dancing intimately, drinking, and kissing as Smith, Reyez, and Koffee sing along to the camera amid the crowd.

Smith’s sound is undoubtedly in a transition, with their music releases being noticeably different from their initial introduction into the music industry. Smith began their career singing emotional power ballads that had an underlying sadness like “Stay With Me” and “Too Good At Goodbyes.” Songs like “Gimme” are showcasing a carefree and fun side of Smith, breaking them out of the box and allowing them to find success outside of the sound that initially brought them their fan base.

It’s presumed that this new album is set to take a more light-hearted approach, though those iconic Sam Smith vocals are sure to remain. This collaboration on “Gimme,” though surprising, truly works well, with the three artists balancing each other out to make a fun club hit.
