Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter and producer NIKI has released a short film for her popular track “Every Summertime” in time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The single “Every Summertime” was released as the lead single of the official motion picture soundtrack for the Marvel Studios’ film, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Written and produced by NIKI and longtime collaborator Jacob Ray, “Every Summertime” is an exuberant love song with a throwback sound reminiscent of classic R&B and soul.
The retro-themed short film, titled Every Summertime: A Love Story, is directed by Daniel Cloud Campos (NIKI’s “Indigo” and Jackson Wang’s “100 Ways” to name just a couple of his other works) and tells the story of a young couple in 1970s Los Angeles, on their anniversary by following them through the years of their love story, with flashbacks of the couple falling in love. The video peaks with the elderly man in the present, dancing a beautiful choreography at the Chinatown Central Plaza in memory of his wife.
In the video description, NIKI says that the short film is “inspired by Shang Chi’s mom & dad, our moms & dads, their moms & dads & all the generational meet-cutes in history that happened and could have been made into music videos – this is their story.”
“Every Summertime: A Love Story” is the fourth music video that NIKI has released for the track. The first video – released in August – was a visualiser featuring tapper and actor Dumbfoundead and Minari star Alan Kim going on a drive around their neighbourhood. A Marvel-inspired music video followed it in September, where NIKI sings and walks between the aisles of a supermarket. The official video for “Every Summertime” was released in December, showing NIKI chasing her music dreams – with visuals inspired by the iconic LoFi Study Girl on YouTube.
The hit “Every Summertime” follows NIKI’s recent release “Split”, from the upcoming Head In The Cloud 3 collaboration album from 88rising.
