Selena Gomez channels Wizards of Waverly Place in Boyfriend music video

Everything is not what it seems.

The deluxe version of Selena Gomez’s latest album Rare was released over the weekend, featuring three new tracks — including one that Selena has dubbed her favourite she’s ever written. ‘Boyfriend’ hears her sing about wanting to find love, but “always hitting dead ends” and “finding wrong ones again and again”.

The track dropped with an accompanying music video, where she embraces the supernatural and alludes to her Disney Channel Wizards of Waverly Place roots.

It begins with Selena driving at night with a cage full of frogs in the backseat — scenes which, while seemingly random, many have pointed out bear similarities to the music videos of her ex, The Weeknd. Armed with a magical potion, she then goes on a series of dates that leave her visibly underwhelmed.

“Which one will she choose?” the tagline reads, but the answer is none of them. Instead, in true Alex Russo style, she flips the adage on its head and turns all the men into frogs. She doesn’t get her Prince Charming, but we see Selena smile to herself as she collects all the frogs before releasing them into the wild under a full moon.

It comes not long after ‘Alex Russo’ was trending on Twitter, as fans expressed their love for the character while spending quarantine re-watching the series on Disney+. Petition for a reboot in the near future pls?
