It’s been 85 days since Taylor Swift last posted on her Instagram grid (8 + 5 = 13, of course it does), but Swifties know all too well that we should always be ready for a surprise announcement. Today is that day, as Taylor has revealed she’s releasing a song for the upcoming film Where the Crawdads Sing.
Announcing the exciting news on Instagram, Taylor wrote:
“Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago. As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side. I wrote the song “Carolina” alone and asked my friend @aarondessnerto produce it. I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story. You’ll hear it fully soon, but for now check out the @crawdadsmovie trailer for a clip!”
In the trailer, we’re treated to a teaser of the new song titled ‘Carolina’. Demonstrating her incredible songwriting skills, Taylor wrote the song alone. It sounds hauntingly beautiful, with Taylor’s ethereal voice providing a sneak peek into the lyrics.
They never saw me
You didn’t see me here (You didn’t see me)
No, they never did see me here
There are places I will never, ever go to
Things that only Carolina will ever know
The vibe of the song sounds not too dissimilar from songs Taylor has previously written for film soundtracks, namely ‘Safe & Sound’ from The Hunger Games or even Cats’ ‘Beautiful Ghosts’.
Based off the bestselling 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens, the film follows Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman from the North Carolina marshes who becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.
Where the Crawdads Sing will be released in July 2022, but we’re hoping Taylor drops the song before then!
