Olivia Rodrigo unveils new side to album with bad idea right?

The track is the second single from GUTS.

Olivia Rodrigo has released ‘bad idea right?’ the second song from her upcoming album GUTS, set to be released 8th September 2023. The single showcases a new side to the record and explores a different sound from what we’ve heard.

In an email to fans, Olivia explained that the new track was “pretty different” from her previous single ‘Vampire’ and “shows another side of GUTS that’s a little more fun & playful”.

The retro-styled music video, directed by Petra Collins, sees Olivia at a party with real-life friends Iris Apatow, Madison Hu and Tate McRae. In line with the lyrics, Olivia wanders around as partygoers confirm to her “it’s a bad idea right?” to text her ex before she ignores them all saying ‘Fuck it, it’s fine.” She then embarks on a journey to her ex’s house, hitchhiking in the back of a truck in the rain and being splashed by a drink on public transport.

In a statement, Olivia talked about the process of creating ‘bad idea right?’ in the studio:

“We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall – in one of the choruses there’s a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it’s me gradually screaming louder and louder.”
