Chatting SWICY with UNIS: Sweet Vibes, Spicy Energy, and Everything In Between

With the release of the 2nd Mini Album SWICY, rising girl group UNIS is serving up a flavourful comeback that perfectly blends their sweet charm with a bold, spicy flair. SWICY is living up to its name, combining the words ‘sweet’ and ‘spicy’ to highlight the variety of personalities and styles within the group, demonstrating once again just how extraordinary UNIS is.

We spoke with the members to find out more about their favourite songs, personal stories, and the true meaning of SWICY. From recording moments to playful behind-the-scenes memories (and plenty of tteokbokki fans), UNIS shares details about their journey, their fans, and their constantly evolving identity.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your 2nd mini album SWICY?

HYEONJU: ‘SWICY’ is a new word that combines SWEET and SPICY. Our second mini album SWICY is an album that contains both spicy and sweet charms of UNIS, just as the word ‘SWICY’ means.

Which track from SWICY is your personal favourite and why?

HYEONJU: I like ‘Spring Rain’ the most. It really suits Korea’s weather right now, which makes me keep listening.
NANA: I like ‘Spring Rain’. The song’s mood matches with romantic drama, and I like it so much
GEHLEE: I love ‘Good Feeling’. Our vocals suit so good into the song, and I like hearing it at first time!
KOTOKO: I think ‘Spring Rain’. I like rain, so whenever it rains, I will listen to it
YUNHA: I like ‘Spring Rain’ the most! Whenever I listen to ‘Spring Rain’, I feel that I become the main character of the drama.
ELISIA: I like this song ‘from a Seed called ‘Hey, what’s up’ because the melody and beat is bright and catchy, and the lyrics are heartwarmingly cute
YOONA: I will say ‘From a seed called ‘Hey, what’s up’. It’s a bright and clean mood song that shows 8 different vocals and styles after the title track ‘SWICY’.
SEOWON: I say, ‘From a seed called, Hey, what’s up’. I feel so high when I listen to this song

Do you have funny or unexpected moments that happened while recording or practising for this comeback that you can share with us?

YUNHA: The music video has a story, so we had to act and watching UNIS acting was so funny.
SEOWON: There are lots of cute and funny unit dancing parts and we all laughed. We really enjoyed dancing.

The concept of SWICY represents a mix of sweet and spicy. How does this concept represent UNIS?

GEHLEE: All the members have different flavors, which are perfect for this album concept. Some of the members were born to be sweet and smooth, while others were born to be spicy and have confidence in themselves. We mixed up these personalities and made a perfect match. For UNIS, ‘SWICY’ is not just a concept but showing really what is UNIS.
YOONA: I think full of surprises! We have done charismatic and chic concepts but this time we added cute and fresh concepts which we can show perfect what is ‘SWICY’.

What has been the most unforgettable moment in your career so far?

NANA: I remember the debut showcase. It was our first time standing in front of fans as UNIS. I still remember the nervousness and shy feelings from that time.
KOTOKO: Standing on the big stage as UNIS. It was the time when I felt ‘UNIS is receiving so much love and support’.
ELISIA: Mega concert in Kaohsiung! It’s an amazing experience to be on such a big stage, and I felt like crying tears of joy because of how amazing the audience’s reactions were

What is something about UNIS that you hope people will recognise with this comeback?

HYEONJU: With this album, we are showing a new side of UNIS. I want all the people to recognize that UNIS can do different concepts and can suit it pretty good.

Do you have a favourite sweet & spicy dish?

HYEONJU: I like tteokbokki!
NANA: Gochujang cookie!
GEHLEE: Pancit Canton
KOTOKO: Tteokbokki and ice cream!
YUNHA: Tteokbokki!
ELISIA: The Filipino sweet and spicy pancit canton!
YOONA: Spicy food is Kimchi stew and sweet food is ice cream!
SEOWON: I love tteokbokki!
