Spencer Barnett is busy traveling across country and wrapping up his trilogy of EPs, but his busy schedule hasn’t stopped him from connecting with fans and listeners around the world. With new singles, “eta” and “Welcome To My Mind,” Barnett’s fans have now been introduced to his latest sound and a preview of what’s to come for the rest of 2020. Another EP is planned for release before the end of this year and supporters can also expect a plethora of new visual content coming their way. In an exclusive interview with United By Pop, Spencer Barnett opens up about his latest singles, life during quarantine and more.

What can you tell us about your new singles “Welcome To My Mind” and “eta” and their overall messages?

These tracks are a part of my new project which is about my experiences moving to LA to make music and my search for identity through that. A lot of the songs talk about more complex feelings and experiences through the lens of a relationship because that’s the easiest way for me, and I think others as well, to digest deeper concepts and themes. “Welcome to My Mind” specifically is about my inner struggle to open myself up to people which is necessary as an artist, but is really hard to do sometimes.

For new fans who have just discovered your music, what would you like them to know about you?

I love music, I overthink everything, and I’m shy…but I love people.

You have released a ton of successful solo music! Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or have a track with in the future?

I’d love to do a song with Chaz of Toro y Moi or Mura Masa. I’m fans of both and think we could cook up something cool!

During the global pandemic, what artists or bands have you found yourself listening to?

I’m actually driving across the country right now, so I’ve been listening to a lot of full albums! Mostly classics like Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,” Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” and Alt-J’s masterpiece “An Awesome Wave.” But I’ve also been checking out some newer projects as well. I love Mk.gee’s album “Pronounced McGee” and Michael Kiwanuka’s new-ish album “KIWANUKA.”

What else can fans look forward to in the near or distant future?

I’m currently working on finishing up an EP! The music is almost done and I’ve been hard at work putting together a visual world to pair with the project. Can’t wait to share the last chapter of my trilogy of EPs and the culmination of the music I’ve put out since Reckless.
