It’s been over two years since the release of Red Velvet‘s Cosmic, so it’s safe to say Reveluvs have been waiting for this one. Luckily, Velvet Summer doesn’t feel weighed down by that anticipation. If anything, it feels surprisingly easy-going. Red Velvet aren’t trying to outdo themselves or chase the latest trend—they’re simply doing what they’ve always done best: making music that feels unmistakably like IRENE, SEULGI, WENDY, JOY, and YERI. Before even hitting play, though, there’s one thing worth mentioning. In a time where AI-generated artwork is becoming more common across the music industry, Velvet Summer went in a different direction by working with an independent artist @pea_artsoup for its visuals. It might not have anything to do with the music itself, but it makes the whole comeback feel a little more personal. The concept is gorgeous, fits the dreamy summer concept perfectly and shows that supporting real artists still matters.
The title track, ‘Surfin’ Boy’, instantly sets the mood. It’s light, breezy and feels like driving to the beach with the windows down. It’s a different kind of summer song than some of Red Velvet’s biggest seasonal hits, but that’s what makes it work. Rather than going big, it stays relaxed, letting the group’s vocals do most of the talking—and, as always, they absolutely deliver. Next up, ‘Hot Girls Cold Vibe’ brings a completely different energy. There’s something oddly nostalgic about it that reminds you why Red Velvet have managed to stay so distinctive for all these years. Even when they experiment with new sounds, there’s always something familiar underneath it all as the song balances those contrasting moods really well, making the title make perfect sense by the time it ends.
My personal favourite has to be ‘Orchestra’. It’s one of those songs that doesn’t get your attention straight away but slowly pulls you in. Everything about it feels warm and effortless, like the soundtrack to a late summer evening when it’s finally cooled down outside. It’s mature without feeling too serious, and it’s another reminder that some of Red Velvet’s strongest songs are often the quieter ones.
Things pick back up with ‘Hula Hoop’, which is pure fun from start to finish. It’s playful, ridiculously catchy and exactly the kind of song you can already picture an entire arena singing back to the group; it has a strong potential to become a fan favourite. Closing things the Velvet Summer with ‘Hawaii’, and it’s a lovely way to end the mini album. Yes, it captures those warm holiday vibes the title promises, but there’s also a bittersweet feeling running through it. It almost feels like a little thank you to Reveluvs, a reminder of everything the group and fans have shared over the years.
What Velvet Summer does so well is strike a balance. It introduces new sounds without losing what makes Red Velvet, well… Red Velvet. Whether they’re giving us playful pop, softer moments or some of the best vocals in the industry, every track feels like it belongs. So, after more than a decade together, Red Velvet don’t need to prove why they’re one of K-pop’s best groups. Velvet Summer isn’t about reinventing their sound, it’s about reminding everyone why we’ve loved it for so long.
