Golden Globes: Top Picks & Winning Flicks

0

The 74th Golden Globes are nearly upon us (I wrote this with President Snow’s voice from The Hunger Games in mind) and the competition this year is tough. The Golden Globes differ from the Oscars in the fact that they award not just film but also television. They also have differing categories such as ‘Best Actor in Motion Picture – Drama’ or ‘Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical’. With this, movies that may get overlooked by the Academy Awards can get some sort of just with a Golden Globe. This year’s nominations have seen the Hollywood Foreign Press move forward from their less than diverse ceremonies the past few years. With multiple nominations for ‘Moonlight’, ‘Hidden Figures’, ‘Lion’ and ‘Fences’. So here we go, here are my winning picks for the ceremony which is set to air this Sunday!

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Hacksaw Ridge

Hell or High Water

Manchester by the Sea

Moonlight

Lion

I believe (and also hope) that ‘Moonlight’ will pick up the win. The film was simply put, stunning. Telling the story of the racism and homophobia that a black gay man has to go through from his childhood right up until his adult life. The performances are heartbreaking and simple, the story is a breath of fresh air that the world needs to see. Yes, queer black people exist.. and they are beautiful.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

20th Century Woman

Deadpool

Florence Foster Jenkins

La La Land

Sing Street

My pick? ‘La La Land’ or ‘Deadpool’. I would love to see ‘Deadpool’ win, but I also believe just a nomination is huge for a superhero film. Therefore, I reckon ‘La La Land’ will clinch it. What a deserving win too. A stunning, classic Hollywood movie. Excellent cinema.

Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Actor – Drama

Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea

Joel Edgerton – Loving

Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge

Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic

Denzel Washington – Fences

A beautiful raw performance by Garfield. In the midst of war, Garfield is able to portray the humanity that is within every single person. The embodiment of the pure soul. Part tear jerker, part horrifically graphic. A great film and performance.

Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Actress – Drama

Amy Adams – Arrival

Jessica Chastain – Miss Sloane

Isabelle Huppert – Elle

Ruth Negga – Loving

Natalie Portman – Jackie

Do I want Portman to win? No. However, I think her transformation and performance in ‘Jackie’ will have won over the voting body. My pick to win? Amy Adams.. a simple classic performance amidst a sci-fi blockbuster… great.

Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy – Actor

Colin Farrell – The Lobster

Ryan Gosling – La La Land

Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool

Jonah Hill – War Dogs

Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins.

Two words…Ryan Gosling. It’s his time.

Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy – Actress

Annette Bening – 21st Century Woman

Lily Collins – Rules Don’t Apply

Hailee Steinfeld – The Edge of Seventeen

Emma Stone – La La Land

Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins

I believe Emma Stone will win, however Hailee Steinfeld’s performance as a down-on-her luck teenager was nothing short of brilliant. Here’s hoping for Hailee!

Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama, Musical or Comedy – Actor

Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water

Simon Helberg – Florence Foster Jenkins

Dev Patel – Lion

Aaron Taylor-Johnson – Nocturnal Animals

A heartbreakingly good performance from the British actor (doing us all proud). A story that deserves a huge audience to see it, I pray he wins.

Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture Drama, Musical or Comedy – Actress

Viola Davis – Fences

Naomie Harris – Moonlight

Nicole Kidman – Lion

Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures

Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea

An incredible actress who quite frankly deserved an Oscar for her role in ‘The Help’. A crazily good performance reviving her Tony Award winning Broadway role. It’s Viola’s year.
