Connie Glynn on writing, YouTube, and her dream casting for Princess in Practice

In 2017, Connie Glynn took the leap from YouTube to publishing when she released her debut novel, ‘Undercover Princess’, the first book in The Rosewood Chronicles. Following Lottie Pumpkin, an ordinary girl who’s always wanted to be a princess, and Ellie Wolfe, a princess who’s always wanted to be an ordinary girl, ‘Undercover Princess’ blessed readers with friendship, conspiracies and royalty. This September, ‘Princess in Practice’, the sequel to Undercover Princess and the second instalment in The Rosewood Chronicles, was released and it’s just as wonderful as book one. With gorgeous writing, unravelling secrets and the stakes higher than ever before for the pupils of Rosewood Hall, ‘Princess in Practice’ has us utterly hooked.

We got the chance to chat with Connie about The Rosewood Chronicles and what the future has in store for the series and its author.

Firstly, I have to start by asking, Rosewood Hall consists of three houses; which house do you think you’d belong in?

I fluctuate between Stratus and Conch.

Were there any books or authors who inspired you to write books of your own?

Honestly, my biggest inspiration is my mum, she’s an amazing storyteller and encouraged me to read a lot when I was growing up, I even got her to feature on the first audiobook.

There seems to be a reoccurring theme of princesses. Which Disney princesses do you think Ellie and Lottie are most similar to and why?

Ellie would laugh at the idea of being compared to a Disney Princess which probably makes her most like Mulan. They don’t care about gender roles and what’s expected of them, they’re at their best when they get to be themselves.

Lottie would definitely be Cinderella, kind and hopeful.

Is there a fictional character you would want to be added to a Rosewood house? Who would it be and why?

I’ve talked about this with my friends a lot. Rosewood Hall is very hard to get into so not many people would make the cut, but Jane Austin would have made an incredible member of Ivy House.

YouTube is a big part of your life. Does that in any way affect your writing?

YouTube isn’t as a big a part of my life as it used to be, and I feel like writing has more affected my YouTube than the other way around. Writing makes me feel happier and more fulfilled than anything else so I’m trying to do more writing-related videos and share some of my other types of writing based work on there now. It’s been really fun so far and I have so much more I want to create.

If The Rosewood Chronicles ever became a movie, who would be included in your dream cast?

This question always makes me freeze up. I really have no idea, but I imagine Ellie as having a very Kristen Stewart energy, and Kiernan Shipka crossed with Elsie Fisher would be an amazing Lottie.

Do you have any advice for young girls who aspire to be like you and write their own novels?

Read all the time, whenever you can, and absorb it. Pay attention to how the authors you like tell their stories, and if you feel inspired to write, plan, plan plan plan so you don’t get lost and lose your confidence.

What can fans of your work look forward to in either the near or distant future?

Honestly, it’s a mystery to me as well, I like to try everything so, as far as the universe knows I could be flying to the moon a year from now.

And of course, more books, lots and lots of books.

If you could speak to any of your favourite authors, who would it be and what would you ask them?

One of my favourite authors is a Japanese comic book writer called Yuu Watase who writes and draws incredible and heartbreaking epic fantasy stories. She has a habit of killing off lots of her characters, no one is safe, so I’d probably ask her which character’s death made her the saddest.

Lastly, can you give us any hints as to what to expect in the third instalment of The Rosewood Chronicles?

I can tell you that it gets darker, and it’s not going to go how people expect.
