Lizzo has made her grand return to the music scene with the release of her newest single, “Rumors”. The 3-time GRAMMY winner has quietly been working on new music for a while, and occasionally updating fans on its status through Instagram and TikTok. The new track arrives just in time before summer ends, and she enlisted the help of Cardi B, who is featured on the song.
“Rumors” is a playfully confrontational song, where Lizzo and Cardi B tackle everything the haters and critics say. Lizzo begs the question: “Why you spendin’ all your time tryna break a woman down? / Realer sh*t is goin’ on, baby, take a look around”. The song is set to a strong bass beat and features a brass section in the chorus, reminiscent of Lizzo’s high school and college days in marching band.
Lizzo has previously collaborated with Ariana Grande and Charli XCX, but “Rumors” marks her first with Cardi B. Earlier this week, Lizzo shared a video on Instagram revealing the song’s featured artist (and joked that it was Harry Styles). Cardi B recently collaborated with Normani on her song “Wild Side”.
The music video sees Lizzo and Cardi B as Greek goddesses, complete with gold outfits and bronze makeup. The video has already sparked comparisons to the muses in the 1997 movie, Hercules, and has fans begging Disney to cast them in a future live action version.
Lizzo will be performing for Global Citizen Live from New York City on September 25, along with Shawn Mendes, Billie Eilish, and more. She’s also on the lineup for other music festivals taking place in September and October.
