New covers for YA classics

Books by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Gabrielle Zevin, and Marissa Meyer get a revamp.

In recent years many YA books we grew up loving have gotten new covers —  today let’s discuss three authors whose books have new editions coming out this year.

Little White Lies and Deadly Little Scandals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

We all know Jennifer Lynn Barnes from The Inheritance Games but before writing the BookTok fave, the author actually wrote other books. The Debutantes is a duology consisting of Little White Lies and Deadly Little Scandals. The story follows Sawyer who accepted a deal to become a Debutante (and get college fund from her grandma) in order to figure out who her dad is. Yes, we are thinking what you are thinking — the vibe is similar to The Inheritance Games but trust us, this is different. Instead of swooning after Hawthorne brothers and trying not to get killed, Sawyer focuses more on female friendships and committing little felonies with them. You read that right. Anyway, it is super fun to read about all the troubles they got into throughout the book.

Let’s also quickly chat the covers — the original cover feels a little dated and does not suit the story too much (flowers?!) but the new one shows three debutantes holding tools, a great nod to the troubles they get into.

Elsewhere and Memoirs  of a Teenage Amnesic by Gabrielle Zevin

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is a classic but for those who found out about Gabrielle Zevin through Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, time to check this YA classic out. The story follows Naomi who lost her memory after an accident, but it is also a coming-of-age story about finding oneself, living to people’s expectation, and having second chances.

Now, onto the covers — we definitely love the new Elsewhere cover more than the original one but for Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, we are actually indifferent between the two. We love the typewriter on the original one — a nod to Naomi’s heritage and the first letter from Will, but the new one is about camera and the stairs where Naomi tripped (sorry, dove!).

Instant Karma and With a Little Luck by Marissa Meyer

We are just here to chat the cover as Marissa Meyer has already chatted with us about writing quieter romances such as Instant Karma and With a Little Luck. You can read more about her story here.

The new cover is definitely more suitable for the story, given the Pru and Quint work at a local rescue centre for sea animals. However, unfortunately, we have to admit that we slightly prefer the original cover over the new one as we aren’t the biggest fan of the cursive font and the yellow shirts…
