If you’re a newer K-pop listener, there’s a chance you’re missing out on some of the hidden gems that exist within the older “generations” of the genre. One of those underrated groups tucked away from the mainstream is SF9, who recently wrapped up their first U.S. tour since 2016. Last month in Chicago members Inseong, Youngbin, Jaeyoon, Hwiyoung, and Chani took the stage at Concord Music Hall for their Live Fantasy #5 LOVE DAWN Tour. While members Dawon, Zuho, and Yoo Taeyang were unable to participate in this run, the quintet on stage still gave the performance their all.

SF9 have been assembling one of the most excellent discographies in K-pop since 2016, and the setlist gave their fans (known as FANTASY) a little taste of everything. As a longtime casual listener, it was nice to see classics like “MAMMA MIA” and “O Sole Mio” still being performed so many years later. Solo stages have become almost a standard for K-pop concerts, and this tour was no exception. Hwiyoung’s cover of “back to friends” by sombr and Inseong’s version of “On the Ground” by Rosé seemed to be audience favorites. This group is full of seasoned singers and dancers, and it was refreshing to see them step out of their group role and give the crowd a taste of their personal style with their individual sets. Their years of experience as idols have molded them into excellent performers; their sharp moves and top-tier vocals were consistent from start to finish and they gave 100% of their energy.

While SF9 might not be a household name, they’re treasured by 3rd generation K-pop stans across the globe. Chicago FANTASY made sure the show was packed, even on a Sunday night. After asking the audience how many people had to work the following day, the members expressed their gratitude and encouraged everyone to let loose and have a reason to call off in the morning. The performance was fairly simple in terms of lighting and environment, but neither the group nor the crowd needed flashy pyrotechnics or a giant stage in order to make the night memorable.

SF9’s music is timeless, their dancing is always clean, and their fans had been waiting for quite a while to see them and cheer them on. It’s a feat for a group to last nearly a decade and still draw a crowd internationally, but they stood the test of time and their FANTASY stuck by their side. Both the group and the audience arrived at the venue full of energy, and the atmosphere remained fun and laid back the whole night. Tours like this one are proof that the genre is vast and full of incredible artists, and that small gigs can be just as lively and memorable as stadium shows.
