P1Harmony has consistently been one of the most sonically interesting K-pop acts in the genre since their debut in 2020, and their newly released EP UNIQUE is one of their best yet. The Brazillian funk-inspired title track of the same name sets the tone for the project immediately; the members know exactly who they are, and that they’re a force to be reckoned with. On top of being a contender for one of their strongest albums sound-wise, UNIQUE seems to have launched the group into their most successful era yet. They’ve secured a No. 4 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart and the highest first-week sales (503,745 copies) they’ve seen so far.

While the EP as a whole is incredibly solid, two songs in particular stand out among the rest. “Pandemonium” has a vibrant but chaotic atmosphere that you can’t help but dance to. A lot of P1Harmony’s music seems tailored to get people off their feet at their live shows, and this is another lovely addition to that collection. “L.O.Y.L.” is a dreamy and experimental track that creates two different sonic worlds in one. This kind of switch up is certainly hit or miss, but in this case the styles are blended together beautifully.

“Wednesday Girl” is a sweet pop-rock track that gives the group a chance to show off their vocal talent a bit more. “Triple 7” and “ICE (VVS)” wrap the album up with a bold hip-hop sound to match the boisterous attitude in the first half of the album. Also, “Moves so iconic / So cold they call me Slavic” might be one of the funniest bars I’ve heard in recent history.

P1Harmony’s discography has been consistent but ever-evolving; every release feels fresh and polished while still remaining true to their style as a group. Their music (which is largely written and produced by the members) draws inspiration from many different genres and often takes an experimental direction. Each song on the EP was co-written by members Intak and Jongseob, with Keeho and Jiung contributing as well. The album’s theme of unapologetic confidence and their bond as a team comes across so strongly, and it’s because they truly mean it. They’re unafraid to be seen as different, and instead view it as a strength they all share. UNIQUE is easily one of the best K-pop releases of the year so far. In an era that’s overloaded with trend following and nostalgia bait, this feels like a breath of fresh air.
