Heartstopper, which started out as a webcomic in 2016 on both Tumblr and Tapas (and still updates there three times a month), was self-published by Alice on Kickstarter in 2018 and later published by Hachette in 2019. It follows teens Nick and Charlie, who meet at an all-boys grammar school and become fast friends despite being very different.

Charlie, who was outed as gay last year and faced a lot of bullying from his classmates, falls hard for Nick even though he doesn’t stand a chance because Nick is straight – right? But as they grow closer, Nick starts questioning everything…

The series follows the pair and their friends as they traverse high school, first love, and the many layers of coming out.

Alice Oseman is a YA author and illustrator from Kent, who published their first novel, Solitaire, at 19 years old with HarperCollins. Their other novels — Radio Silence, I Was Born For This, and 2020’s Loveless — have also been published by HarperCollins.

Euros Lynn is a Welsh director, best known for his work on TV shows such as Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Black Mirror. He recently directed an episode of His Dark Materials, adapted from the Phillip Pullman novels.

See-Saw Films previously produced series such as Top of the Lake and Love, Nina, and films: The King’s Speech, Widows and Ammonite.

There’s currently an open casting call for the series, run by Daniel Edwards Casting. In fact, shortly after Alice shared this to her Twitter, the website crashed!

No release dates or further series information have been announced so far, but you can follow Alice on Twitter to keep up on the latest news. You can start Heartstopper from the beginning on Tapas or Tumblr, or pick up a physical copy of volume one here:  Hive / Waterstones / Amazon.

Heartstopper Volume 4 is set for publication later this year, on 13th May 2021.
