On the surface of it, ‘Late Night’ looks like any other comedy, but delve deeper and you’ll see that this packs a punch of realism. Penned by Mindy Kaling, ‘Late Night’ follows the story of Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) a late-night host whose ratings have been declining for nearly a decade, because of this she’s told she’s due to be replaced by someone younger and more attuned to the modern-day comedy landscape.

In an effort to counteract her replacement, Katherine demands that her writing staff – which was made up of white men, add a female voice. After a ‘token diversity hire’ Molly, who formerly did quality control at a chemical plant, lands the job. Eventually, Katherine warms to Molly and she’s able to showcase her comedic voice.

If you’re after a fluffy, feel-good movie – you half get that with ‘Late Night’.  Scratch a little deeper under the surface and you’ll find two strong female leads encompassing different diversities. Katherine can be cruel with the people in her life, both romantically and professionally while Molly can be too open for her own good. These flaws and how they intertwine with each other are what makes the story really interesting.

‘Late Night’ packs a political punch and gives you an inside look at how the entertainment industry works. If you’re wondering what to do on a miserable weekend ‘Late Night’ will bring a smile to your face and brighten up your life with this stellar performance from Emma Thompson.
