Fifth Harmony have had a fresh start as a four-piece this year, but things were definitely not easy when Camila Cabello decided to up and leave the girl group. Ally, Dinah, Lauren and Normani sat down with Billboard recently and shared what happened at camp 5H following the shock split that surprised us all.

Lauren explained about the groups fear for their future after putting in so much time and energy into getting where they were in 2016, their most successful year yet.

“We’d put blood, sweat and tears – and birthdays and funerals we missed – into this thing.

“It’s our livelihoods and our families. This is the train, and now you’re like, ‘Is the conductor going to come through with the coals, or are we left here to die?'”

Ally spoke about how there were “many therapy sessions” to help cope with it. But Dinah decided to quit worrying when they released the first press photo of them as a quartet and the internet, including Ellen DeGeneres, decided to edit themselves into the frame, “trying to recruit themselves into the squad.” But if you’re wondering if there’ll ever be a new member of Fifth Harmony, there’s one answer: “Heeeell naaaw!”

When asked about the whole drama following Cabello’s departure, where the girls accused her of quitting through her reps only to have Camila deny it, the girls recollect on how stressful the entire thing was, as Normani says: “I get to sleep at night knowing we did everything in our power as friends, bandmates and human beings to make it work.”

The girls have also been venturing out doing different things, but promise that it doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the road for Fifth Harmony.

“Last year, we all learned a lesson about mental health and making sure you step away from something. It just makes this stronger,” says Lauren as Normani adds: “Fifth Harmony is the home base, where we always come back.”

What’s adorable about this whole thing is that the girls have a meaning behind their first single as a four piece: “We dedicate it to each other,” says Hansen. “We’ve been together five years, so that message is powerful to us. We’ve been there for each other through ups and downs.”  Awww!

Fifth Harmony’s cover of Billboard magazine hits the shelves on July 22.
