One Direction fans have long since been known to put together and execute some pretty amazing fan projects. Who could forget the incredible, stadium-filling “1D Family” sign in the Milan crowd from the ‘This Is Us’ film?
Or how about Project No Control, when One Direction fans united to make ‘No Control’ — a track off the group’s fourth album ‘Four’ — into a single?
With a history like that, it’s no surprise that the Harry Styles fandom was able to transform London’s O2 Arena into an illuminated rainbow last night at his show.
Two fans masterminded the operation, Luna (@Unicorn_High) and Ksenia (@kksenia2305). They dubbed it the Rainbow London Project and created the Twitter account @RainbowHProject to help spread the word. “We decided to make a project for Harry to show him the power of his fandom, we want to turn the O2 into a massive rainbow during [his performance of the song] Sweet Creature,” they tweeted.
Using a diagram of the O2’s seating chart, Luna and Ksenia assigned each section a specific color. They then took the time to attach small squares of colored paper to a page of typed-up instructions, sort them by seating section, and distribute them before the show.

When the crowd illuminated their colored pieces of paper with their phone flashlights during ‘Sweet Creature’, the O2 transformed into a giant illuminated rainbow.

Since he began touring as a solo artist last year, Harry has made every effort to create a safe space for all at his concerts. He even takes a rainbow flag (brought by a fan) up on stage with him at each tour stop, and last night was no different.
“Security took 5k pieces of paper away from me today AND WE STILL MADE IT HAPPEN,” Luna tweeted after the show. “WE ARE ONE POWERFUL FANDOM I LOVE YOU ALL.”
