It was back in September when I first saw the trailer for the up and coming film ‘Rules Don’t Apply‘ and learned a lot about Howard Hughes. With the release being only days away, 20th Century Fox have released another trailer entitled ‘Exception’. This is the first film that Warren Beatty has starred, directed and written in fifteen years and despite being 80 years old, this film marks a very warm welcomed return.
The new clip focuses on Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins) and Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) as they discuss the rules of Hollywood. Marla Mabrey (who you’ll recognise from ‘The Blind Side’) lands a deal working with director Howard Hughes who falls in love with her limo driver Frank. Both struggle to deal with the sheer eccentricities and unpredictability of billionaire Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty).
Set in 1950s Hollywood, beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey is signed by the infamous director Howard Hughes. As she arrived at the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes who is engaged to be married to his 7th-grade sweetheart and is also deeply religious (Methodist). Despite Howard Hughes’ #1 rule that ‘no employee is allowed to have any relationship with a contract actress’, the instant attraction is too much to resist.
The film is set primarily in Los Angeles, where Hughes spent a period of his life living mostly in hotels both there and at times abroad. The production team have done a pretty awesome job at conveying other locations such as Las Vegas, D.C and London despite each of these places being filmed in LA itself.
Despite not being a biopic, it is described as a romantic comedy, which will give audiences an insight into the life of Howard Hughes before he became infamously reclusive. With a star-studded cast from the likes of Alec Baldwin,Steve Coogan, and Martin Sheen, I can definitely see this being a very close contender for an Oscar.
‘Rules Don’t Apply’ is released in UK cinemas this Wednesday, November 23rd.
