Boston Calling 2017 Lineup – Who You Need to See

0

The lineup for Boston Calling 2017 (which is basically New England’s only music festival of note) was just released, and the consensus is that this is their best lineup yet. Last year saw Sia headlining, which was an incredible, theatrical show…

2015 had Beck, and 2014 even had Lorde. But 2017 is going to make you forget about all of those.

Boston Calling is officially leaving City Hall Plaza for the Harvard Athletic Complex, which can hold an estimated additional 13,000 people. This increase in potential audience size probably allowed them to secure such an impressive lineup. Thanks to the Harvard location, too, there will be a special showing of a film curated by Harvard alum Natalie Portman. There is no doubt in my mind that the performers and larger venue are going to pull in people from all over the northeast (if not all over the country).

Top Acts

Tool / metal / The top billing act is kind of an odd fit with the usual indie vibe of Boston Calling, but they’re sure to draw an additional crowd to the festival. They will also be at Governor’s Ball in New York this year.

Mumford & Sons / folk rock / This British folk rock band first got traction in the States back in 2010 with “Little Lion Man.” They headlined Bonnaroo in 2015 and will be opening up for a few of U2’s tour stops before hitting Boston.

Chance the Rapper / hip hop / A newer artist but already GRAMMY award nominated, Chance the Rapper canceled part of his own tour last year due to personal reasons.

Bon Iver / folk rock / GRAMMY award winning band Bon Iver is currently touring their latest album ’22, A Million’.

The xx / indie pop / Another British group, The xx’s third album is actually due out this week.

Major Lazer / electronic / Comprised of Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire, Major Lazer had two massive hits in 2016 (‘Lean On’ and ‘Light It Up’) and followed those with their chart topper ‘Cold Water’ featuring Justin Bieber.

Weezer / alt rock / Also hitting Hangout Music Fest in Alabama and Forecastle Festival in Kentucky, Weezer are touring their tenth (tenth!) album, the White Album.

The 1975 / pop rock / Enormous in their home country of England, the 1975 will be touring the world in 2017. Boston Calling and their own headlining show at Madison Square Garden will be their only U.S. stops.

Other Acts of Note

Tegan & Sara / indie pop / This Canadian duo is coming off a world tour of their eighth studio album last year. Pretty sure they performed at my college once.

Mondo Cozmo / alt rock / One of our favorite up and coming artists here at United By Pop, we’ve included his tracks multiple times on our On Our Radar feature.

Cage the Elephant / alt rock / I still think “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” is one of the catchiest songs of all time.
