Life’s funny, isn’t it? I was looking through my extensive DVD collection and I happened to stumble across something special. Some of my favourite cartoons/anime that I used to watch as a kid (and still do on occasion). I was hit with so much nostalgia. The theme songs, the music, the dialogue. Everything was perfect.
To share my love for these shows, let me reintroduce you to those kids shows you used to watch back in the day. But let’s be real, you probably still watch them.
1. ‘SAILOR MOON’
One of my favourite anime of all time. ‘Sailor Moon’ was one of the first magical girl shows that left a huge impression on me. I know the English version cut a fair bit of scenes to make it more appealing for a younger audience, however, the music is unforgettable. This show is truly one of a kind. The new anime ‘Sailor Moon Crystal’ is so brilliant, it brought my childhood back. Thank you.
2. ‘DIGIMON: DIGITAL MONSTERS’
My absolute fave as a kid. Every time one of the digivolutions started, I would get up and act it out. Because who wouldn’t? Ok, maybe it’s just me? Even though most seasons had a different cast of characters, I fell in love with every single one. The nostalgia is so real.
The Indigo League was pure awesomeness. Ash and his squad (Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur) were a joy to watch. Now, the show’s continued past its expiration date. In saying that, the ‘Pokemon’ games are so lit. Still the best out there.
It’s time to duel! I owned that card game and had the best deck. This anime was so different and fun. It was the show that left me on the edge of my seat every time it said “to be continued…”. I loved Yugi always outsmarting his opponents last minute.
5. ‘CARDCAPTOR SAKURA’
Yes, I used to shout the chant to release the Clow key. Another favourite of mine. I even have the collection of Clow cards. I adored this show. It was something magical and was an escape from reality. I’m obsessed with supernatural/magic type shows.
6. ‘DRAGON BALL Z’
Goku is our saviour. Half the series was made up of fillers, however, that doesn’t take away the brilliance that is ‘Dragon Ball Z’. A violent show for its time. But trust the English adaptation to tone it down. If you ask anyone who Goku is, they’ll immediately know. Revolutionary.
7. ‘TOTALLY SPIES!’
Because who doesn’t love a kickass show about female spies? A group of three high school girls who were secretly spies. So much fun to watch. I loved it because girl kids shows always played it safe. Being spies is dangerous and it showed young girls it’s okay to do things boys like too. That’s just my perspective.
8. ‘CODE LYOKO’
Remember that show where the characters travelled to a virtual world to battle an artificial intelligence? This is it. ‘Code Lyoko’ was a phenomenal and smart kids show that made me tune in every weekday before school. I was so into the storyline, I wrote fanfic.
9. ‘SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS’
Who am I kidding? I still watch this on Nickelodeon. No shame. If you don’t love Spongebob, did you even have a childhood? Over the years, I’ve seen myself turn into Squidward. Not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.
10. ‘AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER’
Still one of the best animated shows I’ve ever seen. The story is great, the characters are great. What’s not to love? There’s only three seasons but gosh, they are totally worth watching again. If you haven’t watched ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ left, do so now. You’ll be glad you did.
Have I got you all nostalgic yet? I probably have. If not, you’re only lying to yourself. These shows will forever remain in my heart. Never let them die.
